Industry Perspectives: IPv6 Adoption in the Data Center

September 26, 2011 at 11:38 am

9.23.11 | Data Center Knowledge | Written by: Owen DeLong, Hurricane Electric

Most data center operators know that a failure to transition to IPv6 will eventually restrict access to connected resources and degrade communications efficiency. But one lesson of World IPv6 Day (held June 8, 2011) is that IPv6 adoption can bring immediate benefits in the form of improved network topologies and security today.

In determining when to transition to IPv6, the most common concern is the dwindling availability of IPv4 addresses to support additional devices. This limited thinking is a pity, as IPv4 suffers from a host of limitations beyond its address capacity, including inefficient routing and packet processing, indirect data flows, overly complex network configuration, and feeble security. Yes, IPv6’s nearly infinite supply of addresses (340 undecillion) could accommodate an intergalactic deployment of connected devices, but of equal importance is IPv6’s ability to improve routing efficiency, reduce router processing, enable true peer-to-peer connectivity, and eliminate complex layers of indirection like NAT.

IPv6 Transition Strategy: Dual Stack

Despite the clear benefits of IPv6, telecom companies, service providers and enterprises with large data centers struggle to determine the least disruptive IPv6 transition strategy. The key element of maintaining backward compatibility with IPv4 systems during the transition is to encourage a “dual-stack” mentality. All devices along the communication path, including endpoint devices, data-center routers and switches, ISPs, and backbone providers must simultaneously support IPv4 and IPv6.

Although the dual-stack model may appear to add complexity, it has the benefit of ensuring that no matter which protocol an endpoint application wishes to use, there will be support for it in the underlying network substrate. Nearly all modern operating systems support both IPv4 and IPv6, so in many cases, enabling IPv6 is simply a matter of turning it on (or, even better, just making sure that no-one has turned it off). Indeed, the majority of infrastructure behind the global Internet is now dual-stacked. Root name servers (fundamental to how we convert names like he.net into address numbers) have been IPv6-enabled for years, and Top Level Domains (TLDs) like .com, .net and .gov are serviced by domain name servers that are dual-stacked. Presently at least 256 of the 306 TLDs are enabled for IPv6.

CoreSite Receives SVP Energy Innovator Award and LEED Gold

June 24, 2011 at 8:28 am

CoreSite has been selected by Silicon Valley Power (”SVP”) as a 2011 Energy Innovator award winner. In addition, CoreSite was awarded LEED Gold certification from the Green Building Certification Institute (”GBCI”) at the first of its four planned Santa Clara campus data centers.

Silicon Valley Power awarded CoreSite the Environmental Innovator distinction within the Energy Innovator group based on CoreSite’s comprehensive efforts to support energy efficiency and renewable energy. SVP cited CoreSite’s energy-efficient air temperature design that will save an estimated 6 million kilowatt-hours annually, enough energy to power 6,750 homes for a month.

“CoreSite was selected from a number of excellent candidates for this award, each of whom was evaluated based on a rigorous review and scoring process,” said John C. Roukema, Director of Electric Utility at Silicon Valley Power. “Everyone at Silicon Valley Power would like to commend CoreSite for their efforts in energy-efficiency and renewable energy.”

CoreSite also received a LEED Gold certification from the GBCI. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is defined by the USGBC as a framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions and promotes sustainable building and development practices through a suite of rating systems.

ConXtech Erects Steel in 9 Days for CoreSite’s Santa Clara Data Center

April 18, 2011 at 9:08 am

ConXtech’s ConXL™ product delivered unprecedented construction efficiencies as well as the robust steel frame for the 101,000 SF, LEED Gold data center

CoreSite_big

Hayward, CA. – April 12, 2011ConXtech® Space Frame Systems, a leading provider of innovative, robust structural steel solutions, today announced the completion of ConXL steel framing in nine days at CoreSite Realty Corporation’s (NYSE: COR) 101,000 square-foot Santa Clara data center. ConXtech began erecting on January 27th and topped out steel on the project on March 9th. The ConXL product addressed CoreSite’s need for a robust, long-span steel data center frame delivered cost-effectively and with increased speed to market.

ConXtech’s ConXL product is a long-span steel framing solution developed for commercial real estate structures such as hospitals, data centers, hotels, and industrial structures for the oil and gas industry. Benefits of ConXL include decreased overall tonnage, increased speed to market and safety, inherent seismic, blast and progressive collapse resistance, and overall cost-effectiveness.

“Structural robustness combined with the brace and shear wall free interior makes ConXL an ideal solution for data centers,” states Robert J. Simmons, CEO of ConXtech. “The enablement of future interior space customization is just one of the many ConXL benefits realized by leading data center providers such as CoreSite, who pride themselves on delivering flexible solutions to meet the custom needs of its enterprise clients.”

CoreSite’s Santa Clara data center at 2972 Stender Way is being built to LEED Gold standards and will feature energy-efficiency initiatives such as 97%-efficient UPS units, variable-frequency driven (VFD) cooling units, and air-side economization. The data center project is a part of CoreSite’s planned 496,000 square foot Santa Clara data center campus at Coronado Drive and Stender Way.

“CoreSite selected ConXtech as the steel provider for its Santa Clara data center project based on the structural robustness of the company’s ConXL steel product as well as the projected budget maximization and speed to market as was determined during the vendor selection process,” commented Billie Haggard, CoreSite’s senior vice president of data centers. “We are pleased with ConXtech’s performance and the strength of the steel frame they delivered.”
