NANOG 73: Keynote Feature

On June 25th, 2018, a thousand network professionals descended upon the Hyatt Regency hotel in downtown Denver. The North American Network Operators Group (NANOG), is the professional association for Internet engineering, architecture and operations. Their focus is continuous improvement of the data transmission technologies, practices, and facilities that make the Internet function. NANOG hosts meetings three times per year where professionals get together and talk Internet. NANOG 73 was the third time the event had been held in Denver and CoreSite was the host sponsor.

Paul Szurek, President and CEO of CoreSite, gave the keynote speech on big data, emergence of the IoT, evolving consumer demands, and how enterprises can configure their infrastructure to handle those changes. Take a look at an overview of his presentation:

Technology, just within the past 20 years, has grown at an astounding rate.

Since the turn of the century, the worldwide population has increased by 1.5 billion.

The number of connected devices worldwide have increased from 129 million to over 23 billion. There are now nearly four connected devices per person.

In 2000, total global Internet traffic was 75 Petabytes per month. By 2017, the average Internet traffic was 122 Exabytes per month. IDC predicts that by 2025, we’ll be at 14 Zetabytes per month.

And that number continues to grow with more connected devices from homes, wearables, equipment, cities, factories and cars. All of these “devices” create enormous amounts of data.

Innovation and improvement overcame some key obstacles to make all this possible. The cost of connectivity, computing, data analytics, and other components have declined substantially, while internet access points have proliferated. Wi-fi coverage is now commonplace, for example.

Consumer behavior is driving this exponential growth, creating massive revenue opportunities for apps, e-commerce, entertainment, social networking and even fake news. And consumers constantly want better and more. Surveyor Aberdeen Group says 25% of users will abandon a Web application after only three seconds of delay, and 48% will uninstall or stop using an app which runs slowly. Businesses consuming services via the cloud are following the same pattern of rising expectations. The norm and expectation is on-demand, real-time, instant gratification. Any latency or decrease in performance means lost business due to poor customer experience.

The strain on digital infrastructure is a mounting challenge worldwide, so how do you and your business make sure your customer's demands are satisfied?

Many are turning to hybrid cloud architectures, which permit scaling, expansion and adoption of new products at a dizzying pace. Most companies today can deploy valuable, innovative, customer-facing applications globally from a single, well-connected data center with the right customer ecosystem.

IT infrastructure constructed in good colocation gives you direct internal access to the right partners. Those could be cloud providers, managed services and distribution or collaboration companies. And it helps to keep your workloads stored with proximity to the maximum amount of people. From CoreSite’s eight major metro markets, you can cover more than 75% of U.S. businesses within 5 milliseconds. And you can deploy globally through our on-premises cloud providers and networks.

If you attended Nanog 73, we hope you caught the presentation and found it valuable! We look forward to seeing you at the next meeting.
