AWS Direct Connect and CoreSite

AWS can be accessed in all ten of our markets, either through direct fiber connectivity, or through one of our network partnerships.

Dedicated Connections. Customers in Los Angeles, Silicon Valley, Denver, New York and Northern Virginia can connect to AWS Cloud via the AWS Direct Connect native router deployed at a CoreSite data center. Dedicated connectivity occurs over a standard 1Gbps or 10Gbps Ethernet fiber-optic cable, up to 40Gbps with AWS link aggregation groups.  

Hosted Connections. Customer can connect to AWS Direct Connect via the CoreSite Open Cloud Exchange™ in all ten markets. Hosted connections are available up to 10Gbps in Los Angeles, Silicon Valley, Denver, New York and Boston with hosted connections of up to 500Mbps available in Chicago and Miami.

VMware Cloud on AWS integrates VMware’s enterprise-class Software-Defined Data Center (SDDC) software and Amazon EC2 elastic, bare metal infrastructure; enabling organizations to rapidly extend on-premises VMware vSphere environments into the AWS public cloud. When CoreSite customers access VMC on AWS via AWS Direct Connect, network connections bypass the public internet, streamlining connectivity. By leveraging AWS Direct Connect edge nodes at CoreSite data centers, customers can optimize VMC on AWS with the scale, flexibility and security of dedicated network connectivity.

What is an AWS Direct Connect edge node and why is it important?

Amazon Web Services has selected CoreSite data centers in five markets (Los Angeles, Silicon Valley, Denver, New York and Northern Virginia) to establish AWS Direct Connect locations or point-of-presence. CoreSite is one of two colocation providers in these markets to have native connectivity. This means that AWS has installed routers within CoreSite data centers to provide direct physical connectivity into the nearest AWS region, providing the lowest latency experience for you. The physical link into AWS regions bypass the traditional public Internet and offer ultra-low latency, reduced data transfer costs, improved security and consistent network performance.

Why would I want to access AWS Direct Connect via the CoreSite Open Cloud Exchange®?

The CoreSite Open Cloud Exchange® offers flexible, on-demand connectivity to AWS Direct Connect along with a robust ecosystem of cloud and IT service providers. If you are looking to connect to one or more service providers, the one-to-many connectivity offered by the CoreSite Open Cloud Exchange® is the right solution for you.

I am a CoreSite customer, how do I order connectivity to AWS Direct Connect?

If you are a current CoreSite colocation customer in one of the CoreSite AWS Direct Connect markets, establishing connectivity is simple.

  • Step 1: Login to your AWS account and order a 1G or 10G port for AWS Direct Connect. Within 72 hours, you will receive a Letter of Authorization (LOA) with your port assignment from AWS.
  • Step 2: Login to MyCoreSite service delivery platform and order a cross connect to the AWS port that is referenced in your LOA. Once the cross connect is established, you will have complete Layer 1 connectivity.

Can I access AWS Direct Connect if I am not a CoreSite colocation customer?

If you are not a CoreSite colocation customer, you can still connect to AWS Direct Connect within CoreSite facilities.

  • Step 1: Login to your AWS account and order a 1G or 10G port for AWS Direct Connect. Within 72 hours, you will receive a Letter of Authorization (LOA) with your port assignment from AWS.
  • Step 2: Contact a network service provider to build out a circuit between your on-premise network and the AWS Direct Connect port within CoreSite data centers. Once the circuit is established, you will have complete physical connectivity. For a list of network service providers, visit the AWS Partner Network.

What if I need more than 10G of throughput into AWS?

AWS now offers Link Aggregation Groups, which allows you to purchase up to 4 ports (1G or 10G) and use them as a single managed connection. This allows you to have up to 40G of data transfer throughput. You can order a new group with multiple ports and you can aggregate existing ports into a new group. All ports within the group must have the same speed.

Can I use AWS Direct Connect for VMC on AWS?

Customers can use AWS Direct Connect to connect their VMware Software Defined Data Center (SDDC) clusters, enabling you to extend your on-premises VMware vSphere environment into AWS public cloud, streamlining the VMC on AWS solution.
